Due to the somewhat primitive nature of the original winding machines, original PAFs feature differences in resistance, coil balance, and magnetism. This means that there can be huge sonic variations from one pickup to the next; it is perfectly possible to find very ordinary sounding PAFs, but a good PAF is an experience like no other.\u003cbr\u003e\n \u003cbr\u003e\n To our ears, the perfect PAF tone has always paired the big 3D richness of a humbucker with an almost single coil clarity. Think telecaster on steroids. This makes for a harmonically rich, open tone that responds to your playing style and is far more versatile than you might expect of a vintage output pickup; our PAFs are beautifully clear when played lightly, but are more than capable of sounding huge when you dig in a little.\u003cbr\u003e\n \u003cbr\u003e\n We've been lucky enough to work on many PAF’s in our time, both through repairing the pickups themselves and servicing late 50's\/early 60's Les Pauls (when I say we, it has all been Matt. He's the brains\/pickup wizard\/repair maestro around here). All of the PAF pickups we have instantly liked have had an incredibly similar combination of magnet strength, output and coil balance. We honestly believe that Monty's PAF has perfected this formula. Our best-selling pickup by a country mile, they are designed to offer up a tone that makes you pick up your guitar and play for hours.\u003cbr\u003e\n \u003cbr\u003e\n Just like the originals, our PAF replicas aren’t wax potted. This ensures they are incredibly sensitive and dynamic. The two coils are a little offset (they have slightly different resistance readings), massively increasing the top-end response. In a single concession to anyone in touch with extreme modernity, we do make our PAFs available with 4-conductor wire, perfect for coil-tapping\/splitting. This changes the wiring of the tone cap to resemble that used in a 50's Les Paul. In turn, this affects the interaction between the volume and tone pots, keeping the guitar brighter as you roll down the volume. We always recommend 50's wiring, but the option for standard Telecaster wiring is available. It's also worth noting that 50's wiring makes a treble bleed largely redundant, so we don't normally recommend pairing the two. We firmly disagree; whilst we’ve played many simply outrageous examples of early Fenders over the years, some of the best Teles to come through our workshop have actually been from the late 60’s. In particular, we’ve played several absolute beasts from 1968. We carefully analysed (with permission!) the pickups from these guitars and have recreated them in our ’68 Tele set.\u003cbr\u003e\n \u003cbr\u003e\n Much like their Strat counterparts, late 60’s tele pickups have a slightly lower output and simply unrivalled top-end chime. This comes from their thinner magnets, which combine with the use of less wire to give a slightly narrower coil. This scoops out the mids slightly and boosts the top end, making these pickups wonderful for sparkling cleans. They also sound great driven, the bridge pickup, in particular, having a gloriously edgy top-end that manages to be bright without ever straying in ‘ice-pick’ territory. This gives these pickups real attitude and combines with their outstanding responsiveness to make them an incredibly rewarding set to play.\u003cbr\u003e\n \u003cbr\u003e\n Just like the originals, these pickups are lacquer potted. This means that, rather than being dipped in wax, the coil is sealed with a very thin layer of lacquer. This keeps all but the very outside of the coil free from wax, resulting in an incredibly dynamic, responsive pickup. Traditionally, the downside of this potting technique is that many vintage examples get very microphonic.
