The ~900 is a spiritual successor to our discontinued Four Eyes Fuzz, having a similar fuzz circuit. This pedal has a very wide range of gain, brought to you by four interactive controls: INPUT, FUZZ, BIAS, VOLUME. The INPUT section is a 'mu-amp' design. The INPUT knob controls the level going into this first gain stage - you can go from clean with lots of headroom, to completely slammed and distorted - and everything in between. The FUZZ knob controls the level going into the second JFET gain stage. This section is very dependent on the level of the INPUT. The BIAS knob adjusts the bias of the second gain stage. This gives control over the saturation symmetry, and can also allow gating when turned up high enough. The BIAS knob is especially interactive with the FUZZ knob. The VOLUME controls the master volume output. This pedal has a lot of gain to offer and can get quite loud. The ~900 is an overall very versatile fuzz pedal. It stacks well with other pedals and is friendly to all sorts of instruments and signal levels. The INPUT especially will dictate how the pedal responds. At lower INPUT levels, the FUZZ will have a wide range of tones and interact heavily with the BIAS knob. Based on one very special FOXX Tone Machine in Nick’s collection, this pedal is a shop favorite when it comes to fuzz and anything octave. We took the basic building blocks of the vintage circuit, tweaked it, put a little bit of special sauce in the design by using NOS BC-107B transistors, and threw an added feature in the mix. You’ll notice that there is an octave toggle, like on the vintage units that these pedals are styled after…but, that’s not just a straight-forward on\/off toggle. When the toggle is in STINGER mode, the momentary STINGER switch becomes active. You can simply stand on the momentary switch, to engage the OCTAVE for a lead run, then come off of the STINGER switch to return to normal fuzz, or even tap the switch, to flutter the octave on and off. This feature is absolutely awesome. When the toggle is in OCTAVE mode, the fuzz is permanently an OCTAVE fuzz, and the STINGER switch is NOT ACTIVE. The fuzz control goes from light fuzz with some clean, to raging wall of fuzz tones. The tone control is a wide sweep tone control. All in all, this pedal is a perfect addition to any guitar or BASS player’s tone arsenal. (Finger tight is fine – but don’t get too forceful as some liquids can give a sticky-ness over time that makes the lid harder to undo) . To start again with experimenting, just open the lid and wipe out the container with a paper towel. You’ll hear the guitar sound crumble away to nothing, but as the new liquid hits the container the resulting new sound appears. Some technical stuff… The conductivity of the guitar’s AC signal generally decides the amount of gain, and the opacity (how easily light passes through it) decides the amount of treble and bass. The Minibar often creates satisfying ‘band-pass’ tones – nicely uncompressed, and with plenty of satisfying harmonics and plectrum ‘cluck’. Note; the pedal is sold with no liquid in it, and so will make no noise at all – until you do your bit! In this case, we set our eyes on the MK1 fuzz (which is itself a modified version of the very first fuzz ever). We kept the original controls (FILTER and VOLUME), and added a TONE control and a TRIM control to expand the palette of sounds available. Buffer and pedal order friendly (but with no pickup simulation, we had to tweak the output circuit this time). The original circuit is considered one of the hardest of the classic fuzzes to get right because of the difficulty in transistor selection...with our patented technology we can do it easily and consistently...for the first time ever!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAUTOMATIC THERMAL BIAS TECHNOLOGY\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe bias of the transistors in this pedal is automatically regulated by a circuit that GENTLY warms the Germanium transistors (2N404 OR 2N527) to a preset operating point using analog components, and ensures a consistent sound, no matter the external temperature. When the LED is amber, the transistors are warming up to increase their hFE (transistor gain) and to shift the bias point to the correct voltage. When the LED turns green, the warmer is off because the correct bias and hFE have been set. Expect the LED to toggle back and forth every so often while the pedal is on...that is how you know its working. The heaters will warm the transistors enough to still be effective on a summer stage, but far cooler than anything that would harm the transistors. This pedal is designed to operate between freezing and 100F but might still sound fine outside this range....up to about 120F where we’ve found germanium straight up ceases to function...which can happen if it’s left in the sun.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCONTROLS\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTRIM is a gain control right before the two amplifying germanium transistors...turned all the way up is how the stock design is all the time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFILTER manipulates both the gain and the bias point of the first gain stage. When turned down it will take away gain, bass frequency response, and will bring in to a gentle dynamic expander type effect (where quiet notes will be quieter than normal, the opposite of a compressor) TRIM and FILTER are interactive and there are many different flavors of fuzz and distortion to dial in. This pedal will not clean all the way up, even at low trim volumes there will be some distortion (in a nice way). This control will crackle a bit when turned, since there is some DC across it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTONE is a low pass filter at the end of the circuit, carefully designed to act almost like a tilt EQ to balance the bright attack and full body of the sound, made possible by the original circuit being WAY brighter than the bypassed guitar signal...we think we’ve struck a good balance here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eVOLUME is the output level...which we’ve increased many orders of magnitude from the original. We took the training wheels off so you can push the front end of your amp into sonic madness (if you want). NOTE: this user-beware approch can also lead to settings with a high noise floor. Please remember, this is a crazy and primitive fuzz at its heart...not a piece of pristine recording equipment. Let’s just say there were good reasons for the next four historic revisions of this particular product. If you are concerning people with a high level of hiss and noise, that’s a feature not a bug. David loved what we came up with, but for his personal pedal he requested more bass on tap, mostly for amplifying the sub frequencies of his down tuned guitars. We added a variable bass control, that effectively fades between the thinned out bass sound of the first version of the Zonk Machine (what the Stonk comes with stock), and the wide open sound of the mk1. The addition of more bass allows for even more gnarly, gated, gnarly and crushing Fuzz Tones than the Stonk Box could do stock. The other major difference between the Stonk and the ȘTÖRKN B0kš is the addition of a unique positive feedback switch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnowing David and other unconventional guitarists were going to get a little weird with the pedal, Chris applied a misremembered idea from his lead tech and unconventional guitarist in his own right Carson McWhirter.... He used a diode network in the oscillation path to get weird sub tones, synthy filter sounds and basically the ability to ruin a perfectly good set with the press of a button. It is powerful magic. We honestly can't recommend pressing this button, but if you do, use the fuzz right after your guitar, and make sure to twist every knob including your onboard volume and tone. We won't spoil it for you, but I know we haven't found all the sounds in there yet. AUTOMATIC THERMAL BIAS TECHNOLOGY\u2028\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bias of the transistors in this pedal is automatically regulated by a circuit that GENTLY warms the Germanium transistors (2N404 OR 2N527) to a preset operating point using analog components, and ensures a consistent sound, no matter the external temperature. When the LED is amber, the transistors are warming up to increase their hFE (transistor gain) and to shift the bias point to the correct voltage. When the LED turns green, the warmer is off because the correct bias and hFE have been set. Expect the LED to toggle back and forth every so often while the pedal is on...that is how you know it's working. The heaters will warm the transistors enough to still be effective on a summer stage, but far cooler than anything that would harm the transistors. This pedal is designed to operate between freezing and 100F but might still sound fine outside this range....up to about 120F where we’ve found germanium straight up ceases to function...which can happen if it’s left in the sun. An isolated power supply is no longer required.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Fuzz+ still has a pickup simulator so it can be placed anywhere in the chain without worrying about buffers\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bias control also works a lot better than before at the extreme ranges allowing you to fine tune the bias voltage of the germanium transistors regardless of temperature shifts that normally plague this style of circuit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the heart of the Silktone Fuzz+ are two germanium transistors in the classic fuzz face topology, tweaked to get a huge array of tones and fix all the annoyances you get with a typical germanium fuzz. We wanted to nail the awesome tones everybody knows and loves when these transistors are biased to their sweet spot... and also when they’re not. With our bias control you can easily hit them all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat’s up with that “CLEANUP” knob?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt cleans up the fuzz the higher you push the knob - it works in turn with the pickup sim by mimicking your guitar volume knob to get the cleaner sparkly boost\/light overdrive tones a good germanium fuzz face is known for when you roll your guitar volume knob back a bit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy does it have a “pickup simulator”?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA lot of fuzzes have really low input impedance so when you put a high impedance guitar in front of them it creates this really nice high-mid hump and roll-off keeping things relatively tame and musical. If you place a buffer or any other pedal with a low output impedance before a typical low impedance fuzz you get this really nasty squealing oscillation and lose all musicality and nuance - if you've ever tried placing a buffered tube screamer or wah before a fuzz you'll know this well. The silktone fuzz fixes this with an onboard pickup simulator so you can place the pedal anywhere in the chain and it behaves as if a guitar is plugged straight into it. I really like it after a cocked back wah for some cool Q filtering.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is “BIAS”?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBias is the operating voltage of the transistors, determining how they distort and clip the audio signal. There are a couple common ways most builders approach adjustable bias in a fuzz face circuit, one way is to make both transistors adjustable - things can get messy really easily this way because the transistors interact with each other and that first transistor is really sensitive to changes - it becomes hard to nail down consistently good tones, especially with temperature sensitive germanium... The other way (I've seen done most) is making only the second transistor adjustable - there's less tonal range this way but it behaves better unless, again, it's germanium and gets thrown off by temperature - then there's no correction in place for the first transistor so it can get all out of whack.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eWe do it a little different than either of these methods, the cool thing about the fuzz face circuit is that the two transistors are directly coupled so if you change the values around one it affects the other automatically, we use this to our advantage and carefully bias things internally to make both transistors land where they need to be and enable the external bias control to have a huge range of easily accessed tones that all sound great for what they are and can be recalled any time (or temperature) without trouble.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBIAS points\u003cbr\u003eGated:  1.10 volts (works exceptionally better in raw mode)\u003cbr\u003eSweet:  4.50 volts\u003cbr\u003eFat:  6.50 volts\u003cbr\u003eSticky:  7.50 volts\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy an LED bias meter?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith germanium fuzz being so temperature sensitive even bias knob adjustments on other pedals become completely pointless with big temperature swings - leaving you to set by ear every time which isn't always easy. If all you have is a traditional bias knob with no read-out and you have it set to 10 o’ clock or so in a 70 degree room and it sounds great - and then go play outdoors in 90 degree weather or go down to the basement and it’s 50 degrees - your 10 o’ clock position from before will sound completely different, probably causing a gating effect or something and you'll have to find the new spot you like every time. This was always a pain in the ass to me. The active bias monitor on the silktone fuzz takes out any guess work, you just remember the number you like for whatever tone you're after and if the temperature shifts too much the meter will reflect that so you can quickly and easily dial it right back where you like it and forget about it. With our bias control you can easily hit them all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat’s up with that “CLEANUP” knob?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt cleans up the fuzz the higher you push the knob - it works in turn with the pickup sim by mimicking your guitar volume knob to get the cleaner sparkly boost\/light overdrive tones a good germanium fuzz face is known for when you roll your guitar volume knob back a bit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy does it have a “pickup simulator”?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA lot of fuzzes have really low input impedance so when you put a high impedance guitar in front of them it creates this really nice high-mid hump and roll-off keeping things relatively tame and musical. If you place a buffer or any other pedal with a low output impedance before a typical low impedance fuzz you get this really nasty squealing oscillation and lose all musicality and nuance - if you've ever tried placing a buffered tube screamer or wah before a fuzz you'll know this well. The silktone fuzz fixes this with an onboard pickup simulator so you can place the pedal anywhere in the chain and it behaves as if a guitar is plugged straight into it. I really like it after a cocked back wah for some cool Q filtering.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is “BIAS”?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBias is the operating voltage of the transistors, determining how they distort and clip the audio signal. There are a couple common ways most builders approach adjustable bias in a fuzz face circuit, one way is to make both transistors adjustable - things can get messy really easily this way because the transistors interact with each other and that first transistor is really sensitive to changes - it becomes hard to nail down consistently good tones, especially with temperature sensitive germanium... The other way (I've seen done most) is making only the second transistor adjustable - there's less tonal range this way but it behaves better unless, again, it's germanium and gets thrown off by temperature - then there's no correction in place for the first transistor so it can get all out of whack.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eWe do it a little different than either of these methods, the cool thing about the fuzz face circuit is that the two transistors are directly coupled so if you change the values around one it affects the other automatically, we use this to our advantage and carefully bias things internally to make both transistors land where they need to be and enable the external bias control to have a huge range of easily accessed tones that all sound great for what they are and can be recalled any time (or temperature) without trouble.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBIAS points\u003cbr\u003eGated:  1.10 volts (works exceptionally better in raw mode)\u003cbr\u003eSweet:  4.50 volts\u003cbr\u003eFat:  6.50 volts\u003cbr\u003eSticky:  7.50 volts\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy an LED bias meter?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith germanium fuzz being so temperature sensitive even bias knob adjustments on other pedals become completely pointless with big temperature swings - leaving you to set by ear every time which isn't always easy. If all you have is a traditional bias knob with no read-out and you have it set to 10 o’ clock or so in a 70 degree room and it sounds great - and then go play outdoors in 90 degree weather or go down to the basement and it’s 50 degrees - your 10 o’ clock position from before will sound completely different, probably causing a gating effect or something and you'll have to find the new spot you like every time. This was always a pain in the ass to me. The active bias monitor on the silktone fuzz takes out any guess work, you just remember the number you like for whatever tone you're after and if the temperature shifts too much the meter will reflect that so you can quickly and easily dial it right back where you like it and forget about it.
