(We even did a super limited run of this pedal a while back, with a different graphic, and a different chip…that was then, this is now, and this…this is better.) I’ve been asked more times than I can count to do a “Greer Amps version of the RAT circuit…and do it right”…well…here it is. This is our angry, aggressive, larger-than-life and not-holding-back version of the old familiar circuit, complete with the good old LM308 chip. That’s an important detail—so we smacked it on the faceplate. This beast is powered by the same vintage chip that sparked folklore galore back in the day. We updated a few things, including the quality of the components used in the circuit, and you know that old Filter knob? Well, we turned it into a Tone control. It covers the exact same territory the original Filter control did, but…when you turn it up, you get more treble! AMAZING, I know! This beast is ready to melt rigs, rip faces off, and go to war. The result is a stompbox with lots of low-end, good amounts of mids (not scooped), and some searing highs. Distortion goes from a light crunch to a high-intensity heavy distortion.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eActive sustain\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHold any note and chord for a second or more, and a chorus effect fades in – audibly growing the sound. This pedal has active sustain, transforming it from in-your-face dry chunky attack into a 3D room-like churning howl! It’s like a wave coming from behind and pushing you on…..\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYou can adjust the chorus speed – from a slow twist to a fast psycho-wobble. Every long note-bend in a solo has extra flavour and meaning, every feeding-back chord now has movement. Because of the delay in the chorus appearing, you can play fast chords or note clusters – keeping all the accuracy and precision of modulation-free sound – with a glorious chorus bloom fading in on the longer-held bits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, even with all this going on the Break Box is totally quiet when it should be; a noise gate unobtrusively shuts down any hiss and hum when you’re not playing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eVinyl scratch\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut hang on – hold down the turntable pad on the pedal, and your guitar is transformed into a trigger for a record scratch sound! Like a DJ cueing up the guitar track that follows, you can keep the scratch short and choppy, or longer with the classic forward\/reverse movement. The ‘pitch’ control adjusts not only the pitch of the scratch but also the speed (like when scratching vinyl for real). The sound is not a recording – it’s generated inside the pedal itself. A gentle random pitch variation keeps it sounding less ‘sampled’ and more human.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eStrum dampened strings (ie go ‘wacka wacka’) for short triggers, or play an actual note for the longer up-down scratch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe distortion part of the circuit is entirely analogue – tweaked over time to give the best sounds in all kinds of situations. The scratch, noise gate, chorus and chorus fade-up system are all digital.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere’s a hi\/lo trigger sensitivity switch – to help active-output instruments trigger more controllably. The addition of more bass allows for even more gnarly, gated, gnarly and crushing Fuzz Tones than the Stonk Box could do stock. The other major difference between the Stonk and the ȘTÖRKN B0kš is the addition of a unique positive feedback switch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnowing David and other unconventional guitarists were going to get a little weird with the pedal, Chris applied a misremembered idea from his lead tech and unconventional guitarist in his own right Carson McWhirter.... He used a diode network in the oscillation path to get weird sub tones, synthy filter sounds and basically the ability to ruin a perfectly good set with the press of a button. It is powerful magic. We honestly can't recommend pressing this button, but if you do, use the fuzz right after your guitar, and make sure to twist every knob including your onboard volume and tone. We won't spoil it for you, but I know we haven't found all the sounds in there yet. AUTOMATIC THERMAL BIAS TECHNOLOGY\u2028\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bias of the transistors in this pedal is automatically regulated by a circuit that GENTLY warms the Germanium transistors (2N404 OR 2N527) to a preset operating point using analog components, and ensures a consistent sound, no matter the external temperature. When the LED is amber, the transistors are warming up to increase their hFE (transistor gain) and to shift the bias point to the correct voltage. When the LED turns green, the warmer is off because the correct bias and hFE have been set. Expect the LED to toggle back and forth every so often while the pedal is on...that is how you know it's working. The heaters will warm the transistors enough to still be effective on a summer stage, but far cooler than anything that would harm the transistors. This pedal is designed to operate between freezing and 100F but might still sound fine outside this range....up to about 120F where we’ve found germanium straight up ceases to function...which can happen if it’s left in the sun.
